Prevailing Wage

Prevailing wage is a term used to describe the hourly rate of pay, benefits, and overtime paid to workers who perform labor on public works projects, such as construction projects that are funded by federal, state, or local government agencies. Prevailing wage laws require contractors and subcontractors who work on these public projects to pay their workers at least the prevailing wage rate for the specific job classification and geographic area.

The prevailing wage rate is typically determined by the government agency responsible for overseeing the project, based on surveys of wages paid to similar workers in the same area. The purpose of prevailing wage laws is to ensure that workers on public projects are paid fair wages and benefits, and to prevent contractors from gaining an unfair advantage by paying low wages.
